Stay Safe in the Sun: Tips for Summer Sun Safety Month

August is Summer Sun Safety Month, and we want you to have the information to enjoy the outdoors safely and smartly! The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend a layered approach:

  • Sunscreen should be re-applied every two hours and works best when used with shade or clothes

  • Wear a hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing

  • Find a shady spot, especially during midday hours of 10 am-4 pm

Other tips to keep you and your family safe while enjoying the hot, sunny months include keeping babies 6 months and younger out of direct sunlight, wearing a hat with at least a 3-inch brim to protect your ears and the back of your neck, and avoiding clothes with a loose weave that do not provide as much protection.

As far as sunscreen goes, use broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15; research is still out on whether SPF greater than 50 provides any additional benefits. Put sunscreen on 15-30 minutes before heading outdoors, and make sure all exposed areas are covered, including ears, feet, backs of knees, and hands. Use sunscreen outdoors; you can get sunburned even on cloudy days.

If sunburn does happen in a baby younger than 1 year old, be sure to call your pediatrician. For older children, call the doctor if blistering or fever occurs.

Enjoy the last days of summer and remember to use these precautions during Summer Sun Safety Month!
