What is Hepatitis A?

  • Hepatitis A is a disease of the liver caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV)

  • HAV infection usually causes a mild, short-term illness

  • HAV is contagious and spreads through close person-to-person contact and eating contaminated food or drink

  • Vaccination is the best way to prevent infection

 

Who is at risk?

  • Men who have sex with men

  • People with a history of substance abuse

  • People currently homeless or in transient living

  • People in correctional facilities

  • People with underlying liver disease

  • People in close contact with any of the above
