Jefferson County Week 25 COVID Update

June 30, 2021 Brianne Zwiener
Copy of Weekly Guidance Color Graphic (17).png

YELLOW Status | 7-day rolling average cases per day per 100,000 residents: 5.33 | Positivity Rate: 5.23%

CDC Week 25 Epidemiological Analysis: (from JCHD Epidemiologist, Sara Wilton)

From week 24 to week 25, there was a 15% increase in weekly cases. The highest number of cases during week 25 came from our 10–19-year age group. This is a little concerning since most of that age group is eligible for the vaccine, but only 10.82% has completed the full series of vaccination.

Our percent positivity has moved from 4.6% (green) to 5.23% (yellow) and the number of tests performed has continued to drop over the course of the last few weeks. I can’t stress enough the importance of testing especially now with the Delta variant on the rise.

According to the recent MO DHSS health advisory, patient data from areas where Delta is now the most prevalent variant shows that the top symptoms of Delta variant infection are headache, followed by runny nose and sore throat, while fever and cough were less common. These differences in symptoms are important to note. Headache, runny nose, and sore throat may easily be confused with the common cold. Individuals who experience any symptoms of this nature are highly encouraged to get tested though these symptoms differ from the more common Covid-19 symptoms that many have experienced over the past year.

Increased hospitalizations from the Delta variant are happening across the United States as well, most notably, in Southwest Missouri where the local health department has reported that the Delta variant is the cause of 93% of all new cases in the area.

The abnormally high census of hospitalized patients for this time of year is causing much concern. Of those hospitalized patients, it is reported that 98% were unvaccinated. Vaccination rates in that area are slightly higher than here in Jefferson County. Nationwide, there were 18,000 Covid deaths in the month of May and 99.2% of them happened in unvaccinated people. Data has once again shown that getting vaccinated reduces the risk of hospitalization or death from Covid-19.
