February is Heart Month Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. About every 25 seconds, an American will suffer from a cardiac event. But the good news is that 80% of early/premature onset of these diseases is preventable. In fact, there are nine risk factors that you can control: Smoking, physical inactivity, high blood pressure, unhealthy diet, being overweight, high blood cholesterol, stress, diabetes, and excessive alcohol consumption. Food Inspections The health department is responsible for inspections of food service operations throughout Jefferson County. Most of these comprise restaurants, grocery stores, retail convenience stores, daycares, school cafeteria's, fraternal organizations and any food service where the public is served.
