Environmental
tobacco smoke, otherwise known as second-hand smoke is the mixture of smoke that
comes from the burning end of a cigarette, cigar or pipe and smoke exhaled
by the
smoker. It
is a complex mixture of over 4,000 compounds,
69 of which are known to
cause cancer in humans or animals. Environmental tobacco smoke causes cancer, respiratory
infections and is a common trigger for asthma in many people who are
not even smokers.
Children are particularly sensitive to environmental tobacco smoke. To prevent poor
indoor air quality due to environmental tobacco smoke, make your home a tobacco-free
environment. If you want to quit smoking, you can contact the Jefferson County
Health Department or the American Lung Association to get assistance or enroll in smoking
cessation classes.
